13.Guided Discussion
1.What are the advantages and disadvantages of immigration? You may fill in the table with some key words and notes.
建议答案:
Advantages:
? ?1. Exposure to different cultures from around the world allows us to become more open-minded.
? ?2.Host country gets new and motivated workers.
? ?3.Immigration can create new jobs for native citizens in order to help newcomers adjust and find work.
? ?4.Skill gaps may be filled by new workers.
Disadvantages:
? ?1.Influx (涌入) of people from many different cultures can weaken a country’s cultural identity.
? ?2.Often immigrants must work for low wages, which contributes little to a country’s economy.
? ?3.Immigrants may prevent native citizens from getting jobs, especially in areas where there is severe competition.
? ?4.Some employers may take advantage of and exploit migrants.
2.Now think about the following questions: Do you think that the advantages of immigration outweigh its disadvantages? Why or why not?
? Immigration is a topic that often draws very divisive opinions from people. Among the advantages is the fact that a country’s exposure to different cultures through immigration enriches its population. Becoming acquainted with people from different backgrounds allows us to become more open-minded and aware of the world around us, and help counter harmful stereotypes about others. In addition, because many immigrants migrate in order to find better work opportunities for themselves, they come to a host country motivated and ready to work. Many skill gaps may be filled by migrants on the work front, in fact.
? However, immigration is not without disadvantages. For one thing, an influx of many people from different countries can weaken a country’s cultural identity, especially if immigrants are unwilling to integrate. For another, in areas where there is severe competition, immigrants may leave native workers fewer jobs, since many immigrants are willing to work for lower pay. This tendency may also lead to employers taking advantage of migrants by paying them less than what they deserve, not paying them at all, or having them do additional work so that new workers do not need to be hired and paid.
14.Free Discussion
1.答案解析
It is important not to make assumptions about any newcomers, regardless of where they’re from. Everyone’s experiences are different, and we should avoid judging people based on stereotypes. In addition, many immigrants face language problems when arriving in a host country, and as a result are often shy. It is therefore crucial to be patient and understanding with immigrants. Some immigrants may have fled their countries as refugees, so do not try to pry information out of them about their experiences. Instead, let them talk about their personal stories when they feel ready to. Make an effort to reach out to immigrants, as many of them will possibly be too intimidated to reach out to native citizens.

All cultures are diversified. This is even more so for the Chinese culture. In terms of origin, Chinese culture originates not only from the “Yellow River culture”, but also from the “Yangtze River culture”. In terms of philosophical thoughts, the coexistence of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism proves the diversity in Chinese culture. Moreover, Chinese culture is inclusive, as demonstrated in the attitude of Confucianism towards Buddhism. Anyone with a good knowledge of Chinese history will appreciate the inclusiveness of its culture and better understand today’s China.
PartC-Writing
1.Video-based Writing
建议答案:
1) Auggie’s sister offers her brother advice about how to deal with kids who stare at his face, after which she approaches their mother, who puts her arm around her daughter in an attempt to comfort her. This suggests that Auggie’s sister is uneasy about her little brother’s first day of school.
2) The emotion Auggie’s mother shows when her husband removes Auggie’s helmet suggests that Auggie is rarely without it on. The fact that his face is now exposed for others to see therefore makes her nervous about how the other children will treat him.
3) The fact that Auggie’s mother holds her husband and prays for the other children at school to be nice to Auggie implies that Auggie is often not treated nicely by other children, and that she is worried about her son being alone at school without his family.
2.建议答案:
School should feel like a place where everyone is accepted and where everyone is safe. It is a place where children go to learn important skills which prepare them for the future. However, not all children feel accepted and safe at school. In fact, some children are made fun of for being different. When this happens, it is called bullying. Bullying is a problem that occurs in most schools in some form, and one with which all children are familiar. No one should be bullied, but what can be done about it?
?Parents, school staff, and other caring adults have a role to play in preventing bullying. However, there are things you can do as a student to help prevent bullying as well. If you wish to be proactive (积极主动的) in defeating bullying at your school, one of the most effective things you can do is stand up for those who are bullied. Let those who are bullied know that others are looking out for them and that bullying is unacceptable. Make an effort to recruit others to help you stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. You may also wish to start an anti-bullying club at school to gather students and work together to find ways to prevent bullying from happening. It is important to remember, however, that if you want to step in and stop bullying, you must do so safely. Sometimes, you may need the help of an adult to handle the situation. Talk to teachers or guidance counselors who can safely address the bullying. You may also wish to talk to your parents and ask them for advice. No student should be afraid of going to school. It is up to all of us to do our part to prevent bullying.
